Purnululu (meaning "sandstone" in the Aboriginal language) needs no introduction for seasoned travellers. Home to the awe-inspiring Bungle Bungle Range with sandstone domes reaching up to 300 meters, this World Heritage Site has captivated hearts for over 50 years.
How have these formations been created you ask? This is the result of 20 million years of ancient faults and relentless erosion, stretching over an area of 450 kilometres. Witnessing this geological wonder is an experience that will leave you speechless.
With so many options, choosing how to get here is apart of the journey.
Helicopter: Soar above the domes for breath-taking panoramic views. Early morning flights are recommended for the best light.
4WD Tour: Join a guided tour departing from the Bungle Bungle Caravan Park and let the experts handle the driving.
Self-Drive: For the independent explorer, tackle the challenging 53km Bungle Bungle Road (suitable for 4WD vehicles only). Allow up to 2.5 hours for the bumpy ride.
For those brave enough to take on the adventure yourself, there are 2 main spots to explore - the north and the south. The south houses some amazing hikes like one of Australia’s most striking geological landmarks, Cathedral Gorge. This 4 kilometre 2 hour hike starts at Piccaninny Creek car park. Here, you have the opportunity to take a 1 kilometre sandy detour to get up and close with the big domes themselves. In the north, Echidna Chasm is a 2 kilometre scramble but gives the best Instagram opportunity between 11AM to 1PM with red and orange colours. When making the most out of your time here, we recommend that you stay at the affordable Walardi and Kurrajong campsites, online booking is a must. Or opt for the free rest areas at Leycesters Rest and Spring Creek.
