Built in 1901, the Byron Bay Lighthouse has been guiding ships safely past Australia’s most easterly point, Cape Byron, for over 100 years. The lighthouse itself is a sight to behold. Standing tall at 44 metres, its whitewashed tower and red dome make it a landmark that can't be missed.

Once parked, we recommend parking below the lighthouse and walking up the winding road, surrounded by bush. Decide how you will take in the panoramic view. Choose to pay a small fee and climb the 105 steps to the top where, with luck, you might be able to spot a whale. Alternatively, stay on the ground and gaze down the coastline where you might see skilled surfers dancing on waves. Whatever you choose, make sure to bring the camera and post the shots on your socials.

Beyond the view, which is the reason for coming here, explore the Cape Byron Lighthouse Maritime Museum. Here, you will step back in time and explore the history of navigation, shipwrecks, and lighthouse keeping. Interactive exhibits, captivating stories, and artefacts bring the maritime heritage of the region to life. Imagine the challenges faced by early lighthouse keepers, the solitude of their existence, and the crucial role they played in ensuring maritime safety.

Bonus tip: This is considered the best place to see Australia’s sunrise.
