Coastal Walk

Coral Bay boasts a unique opportunity to witness fascinating creatures in their natural habitat at the Shark Nursery and Turtle Cliff.

The Shark Nursery offers a safe and responsible way to observe young reef sharks and manta rays. While swimming and snorkelling is not allowed (to protect the ecosystem), you can wade into the water up to your hips for an incredible close encounter. Just remember to maintain a safe distance of at least four meters and avoid sudden movements to ensure a peaceful interaction for both you and the animals. For those who prefer not getting in the water as shark bait, a designated walking track offers viewing platforms to marvel down with the safety of land.

The trick for maximising your experience at the Shark Nursery is to arrive when the tide starts receding. During high tide, the animals seek shelter in the shallow waters. As the tide goes out, they become more active, increasing your chances of a sighting. While this is a year-round phenomenon, the peak months are between October and March.

Those wanting to do a little bit more can extend their walk westward past the Shark Nursery and follow the scenic coastline. This path leads to Turtle Cliff where turtles gracefully glide through the reef just below the cliffs. Watching these majestic creatures at sunset is a cherished free activity in Coral Bay.

If the hike has grown a craving for a refreshing swim, Five Fingers Reef, consisting of five finger-like coral structures is a paradise for snorkelers and nature lovers

Important Reminders:
Pack your sunscreen, hat, and plenty of water for your walk.
Wear sturdy shoes, as the path can be a bit rocky in sections.
