Here between May and June? This one is for you!
Just a 20-minute drive north of Mount Gambier, the pine forests near Glencoe light up with the glow of ghost mushrooms. These bioluminescent fungi create a magical, otherworldly experience as they emit a soft, eerie glow in the dark. ForestrySA regularly updates a map showing the best spots to witness this enchanting display.
Known as Ghost Mushroom Lane, this area runs through a pine plantation between Kangaroo Flat Road and Blanche Young Forest Road. The one-way lane starts at the Kangaroo Flat end, where you’ll find carparks to stop and explore the forest on foot. The walk through the forest at night, surrounded by glowing mushrooms, is truly a unique and unforgettable experience.
ForestrySA sets up different walking trails each year, depending on where the ghost mushrooms are most vibrant. Keep an eye out for Fungi Hunter Alley, Ghostly Gully, and the Neon Forest trails. Each trail offers a different perspective and atmosphere, making it worth exploring multiple paths to fully appreciate the bioluminescent wonder of the ghost mushrooms. Don’t forget to bring a flashlight and wear sturdy shoes, as the trails can be uneven and dark.
