Often overshadowed by its more famous neighbors, Lesueur National Park offers an off-the-beaten-path adventure. Here, diverse landscapes of rugged sandstone ranges and hidden gorges carved by time will leave you breathless. Summit the challenging 6-kilometer Mount Lesueur for panoramic rewards. This hike takes 3 to 4 hours at a moderate pace with rest stops and time to enjoy the views from the summit. Starting with scenic bushland and elevating with thinning vegetation, the challenge begins with steep sections of loose gravel testing your endurance, but the growing views will keep you pushing to breathe in the great expanse of Lesueur National Park. A good level of fitness, shoes, water, and sun protection are required.
Venturing past Mount Lesueur, immerse yourself in the significance of the Yamaji people, traditional custodians of the land. Discover ancient rock art depicting stories and hunting scenes on the Wandoo Rocks Trail or Ucalkin Rock Art Site. The Wandoo Rocks Trail is a short 2-kilometer, easy, well-maintained trail, suitable for most fitness levels, taking you through a scenic landscape of granite outcrops known as inselbergs that are adorned with Aboriginal rock art. Ucalkin Rock Art Site is a little more challenging with rough and uneven surfaces protecting the well-preserved rock art. Along this 4-kilometer path, you will see Aboriginal rock art paintings and engravings. During your time in these areas of Aboriginal significance, remember this art is irreplaceable cultural treasures and should be respected by maintaining a distance, avoiding touching, and leaving no trace.
