The moderately difficulty, 3 kilometre loop trail of Mandu Mandu Gorge is a must-do for any visitor seeking a taste of the rugged outback. The hike starts with red cliffs towering each side of a rocky creek bed. Keep your eyes peeled for black-flanked rock wallabies clinging to the gorge walls – a common sight in the cooler parts of the day.
Reaching the top makes the few steep sections totally worth it. The panoramic view opens the vastness of the Cape Range National Park stretching all the way to Ningaloo Reef. On a clear day, you might even spot humpback whales migrating along the coast. So make sure you pack your binoculars in your backpack along with plenty of water to keep well hydrated.
When hiking Mandu Mandu Gorge, it's best to go early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the brutal heat. Make sure to bring plenty of water since there's no water source on the trail. Wear sturdy shoes to handle the rocky and uneven terrain, and don't forget sun protection—hat and sunscreen are essential under the strong Australian sun.
