Shell Beach

This UNESCO World Heritage Site doesn’t have a grain of sand; instead, it is a fantasy beach filled with billions of pearly white shells. Stretching over 60 kilometers, Shell Beach is a sight unlike any other, composed entirely of tiny white Fragum cockle shells. This is an absolute must-visit with easy accessibility. Thanks to the unique ecosystem with an interesting twist, shells have been accumulating for thousands of years. The geomorphology and local oceanic conditions produce extraordinarily high salinity levels that keep natural predators away, creating an ideal environment where the Fragum cockle thrives.

Walking on Shell Beach is an unforgettable experience. The layer of shells is surprisingly deep, reaching up to ten meters in some areas. With each step, the gentle crunch of countless shells creates a sense of the destruction of millions of years of natural processes that have shaped this extraordinary landscape.

The wonders of Shell Beach extend beyond its unique composition. The high salinity of the water, a result of Shark Bay's unique geography and ocean currents, is almost double that of the average ocean. This creates a natural buoyancy effect, making swimming in the sheltered bay feel like floating in a giant, protected lake.
