Your opportunity to go in the footsteps of the legendary David Attenborough. If you ever watched David Attenborough’s Blue Planet Series, you might remember seeing the mesmerising giant cuttlefish, growing to 60 centimetres. If not, go check it out on YouTube now, we will wait.
Welcome back, so the only place in the world that has this many giant cuttlefish with the mission to mate is Whyalla. What is surprising though, this has been a well-kept secret for years with divers and marine enthusiasts keeping it to themselves. But in 2023, the secret got out and is now officially recognised as a National Heritage place, your place to witness something truly special.
Two ways to get up close is either getting wet or staying dry. Glass Bottom Boats will take you out and give you a bird’s eye view of it all with added commentary. The wet way is taking a plunge with your snorkelling gear or on a tour. As this event occurs in mid-May to early August, the water might be a little cold so renting a wetsuit if you don’t have one is recommended. Just imagine the thrill of witnessing their ritual displays of colour shift from a mottled camouflage to bursting red, orange, and brown and shape shift as they compete in a ‘look at me’ competition to attract the most ideal mates.
Whyalla's giant cuttlefish gathering has captured the imagination of people worldwide. Divers, international film crews, researchers, and nature enthusiasts all flock to Whyalla to witness this unique natural phenomenon. It's your chance to be part of something truly extraordinary. As giant cuttlefish can be difficult to spot when they are in their natural camouflage state, guides can increase your chance of spotting them and as such, tours do book out quickly.
