Penguins aren’t just found in Antarctica; in fact, there are numerous places in Australia where they can be found burrowing or skedaddling their way across the sand. When in Tasmania, a top place to see them is at Low Head, just a short drive from Launceston. The Low Head Penguin Tour is a must-do for any visitor to Tasmania.

As the sun begins its descent, casting a golden glow over the coastal landscape, you'll join a group of fellow nature enthusiasts for an unforgettable experience. Guided by knowledgeable and passionate tour operators, you'll be transported to the Low Head Coastal Reserve, home to one of Tasmania's largest Little Penguin colonies. As darkness falls, the real magic begins. Watch the tiny creatures emerge from the water, their sleek bodies dressed handsomely, glistening in the twilight. As they waddle up the beach, you'll be captivated by their endearing charm and curious nature. It's a truly humbling experience to witness these remarkable birds in their natural habitat.

Highly recommend this fabulous experience to get close to these beautiful penguins. They literally walked between my feet. The tour was informative and being a small group made it much more personalized. We felt we were able to move around more to where we could best view the penguins. We even saw some babies!

We ended up being super early for our tour, and were invited to watch the sunset from the seating in front of the little stall. The stall had a variety of penguin themed merch available, and we all bought beanies against the cold!

There wasn't much else around, no toilets that we saw or places to get food/beverages. The tour guide noticed my partner's elderly grandmother with her cane, and offered to drive her down to the beach in the van. We were very glad this was offered as the walk would have been too much for her. There was one area with seating for people who needed it, and there were 2 other small groups who stood on the beach.

It wasn't the best night for penguins as it was quite bright and not windy, but we saw a good few groups come in and waddle around. We were led to the best spots to see which were quite close to the penguins. The guides were all friendly and knowledgeable.

It was a great fun and enjoyable experience for all of us. Definitely do heed the warnings about the cold though!
