Did you know this little town has significant relations with NASA's Space Program? How about its role in Australian telecommunication history? Well, luckily for you, Carnarvon Space & Technology Museum will tell you all about it!
Carnarvon firstly appeared on the world map in 1966 as the site of the first television broadcast from Australia to England, visually reuniting British immigrants with their families back home. This was part of testing communication strength being developed to assist the Apollo missions and to say Merry Christmas to family on the other side of the world. Later, the town's position on the world map was cemented with its role in instructing astronauts in their approach to Earth, ensuring they would land in the northern hemisphere.
The museum is located at the OTC Satellite Earth Station and houses interactive displays and experiences such as the Apollo simulation, planetarium movies, NASA memorabilia, and the space theatre. Open daily from 9 AM to 4 PM (April to September) and 10 AM to 2 PM (October to March). Entry is $20 at the door with no need to book in advance.
