Wilderness and Wildlife beckons the traveller to step off the mainland. Catch a ferry across the scenic Gulf St Vincent to Kangaroo Island, Australia's second biggest island (after Tasmania). This is where you wake up to the sounds of Kookaburras and explore landscapes with incredible creatures.
Kangaroo Island, named Kangaroo Island for the abundance of kangaroos first discovered on the island still lives up to its reputation. While exploring, take the time to make a friend who is grazing on grass by making them feel like an Instagram model, if you are lucky, they might even bat their lids or their little joey in the pouch might give a little wiggle as if to say hello. Beyond kangaroos, don’t get confused with the wallabies which look to an untrained eye as identical but they are smaller and present a bit more of a timid look. Keep your eyes up in the trees for your chance to spot koalas and drop bears, near logs and grass you might be lucky and find spiky echidnas, and in the ocean swimming by you might see Seals and Penguins.
Short on time? Fear not, fellow animal enthusiasts – there's a solution waiting for you right in Adelaide! Gorge Wildlife Park (Open 7 days 9AM - 5PM) is a fantastic alternative in the Hills. This award-winning park is a mini–Kangaroo Island with walk-through enclosures for you to come face-to-face with kangaroos, wallabies, emus, and koalas. Some activities here you can’t even do on Kangaroo Island, like feeding kangaroos from your hand or have a photo taken cuddling a koala.
Now it sounds like there are 2 choices and you don’t know which one is better? Kangaroo Island offers the full island experience, but Gorge Wildlife Park is easily accessible by car and public transport. Whatever you choose, rest assured your participation goes a long way to creating memories for yourself while contributing to ongoing conservation efforts.
